Getting Down to Business

Yesterday, I was blessed to have lunch with a dear, sweet friend. Whenever I get together with her, we cut through the ‘small talk’ pretty quickly and – get down to the business of the deeper stuff.

Our conversation yesterday led to some painful territory of reflecting on some very specific moments in both of our pasts that were very low. Very dark. How freeing to talk so transparently with someone who understands. Who has been there in her own way.

Have you ever had a moment in your day where something randomly reminds you of a very specific MOMENT in time that is so painful your heart aches, skips a beat, and your chest literally feels tight? If you answered “yes” to that question, rest easy, you are not alone. I promise.

There are specific moments from my past that keep rearing their ugliness in my mind. Just a handful of them. But they’re there. And when they come, the feelings of pain, regret, guilt, and shame accompany them. They hitch a ride on those memories and hang on for dear life.

I know {intellectually} that God does not want us to dwell there. He created us to live in the freedom and restorative power of our Risen Savior, Jesus. NOT in those feelings of defeat and failure. His good and perfect will for our lives is that we live in the 100% satisfaction guaranteed promises of Jesus. Who went to the cross for each of our failures, and sins? He did.

There are times where my intellect, and my heart fall out of sync. When I dwell in the dark places of my past, the only way to come out of that darkness is through PRAYER and through DIVING into His WORD.

These are the only things that help restore, and remind me of who I am IN HIM. Not who I am apart from Him. By diving in, by going to Him in prayer – the times of chest tightening aching become fewer and farther between. But, they do still exist. It’s a battle. But, I know I will get there…

They say, “time is a healer”. I would add that time heals – ONLY through Christ and His promises!

Susie Larson is one of my favorite authors. I read her ‘blessings’ daily, and listen to her podcasts often. She speaks to this issue of dwelling in our past so simply, and beautifully:

“May you rest assured that God has used all of your past experiences to prepare for this particular season of life. You’re not who you once were. You’re stronger than you know. You’ll have what you need in the days ahead. Jesus has your back and He’s gone before you. Don’t spend too much time pondering the pain of the past. You’re still standing. The devil didn’t win. Get excited about the Promised Land before you. Yes, there’ll be giants in the land. But it’s a good land. Go take it, by faith. And rejoice along the way. Have a great day.”

I couldn’t agree more.

Philippians 3:13-14 – … But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Press on, live in the LIGHT of His presence and grace dear ones!!
